Ettrick, VA. - The Spelman Lacrosse team faced off against Virginia State University in the 2025 HBCU Playday on Sept. 12. The VSU Trojans defeated the Jaguars 4-20.

The HBCU Playday is an annual event for women’s lacrosse teams at HBCUs across the country to scrimmage each other. This year, Howard University, Virginia State University and Spelman College participated in the Playday.

Although weather conditions were less than ideal before and during the game, the Jaguars put up a good fight against the Trojans in a 6v6 matchup. Seniors Nadia Wilson and Parker Hall held down both sides of the field, with the former spearheading the team’s offense and the latter maintaining a strong defense.

“I think the team is in a good place; however, the program is fairly new. With funding and more students joining the team, it will improve over time,” freshman Morgan Hubbard said.

The team has made great headway in regard to increasing team numbers, practicing and fundraising to attend the Playday, but feel they have room for growth.

“When I am at practice, my teammates are often saying ‘l can’t’ or ‘I’m not good at that.’ I always encourage my teammates that they can do it, they’re doing a great job, and confidence comes from within,” sophomore Kayla McKenzie said.

Lacrosse has historically been a sport exclusive to Black people, women especially. Despite that, the Spelman Lacrosse club is working this year to spread the love of the game across Spelman’s campus and the entire AUC.

“I hope the team continues to gain support from the school and the student body over time.  I’d love to see other students come and support us at our games,” Hubbard said.

This game is just the beginning for the Spelman Jaguars. The team intends to continue practicing, participating in playdays and scrimmaging other teams in preparation for the spring season, when they will be in full swing.
